The Daunting Call

The nation of Judah was under the pump.  Left isolated and vulnerable by Assyria’s decimation of the larger northern kingdom she felt the external pressure of the Assyrians to the north and the Egyptians to the south.  But internally she was sick as well.  She had endured a long reign of the evil King Manasseh who driven the nation into idol worship and all kinds of abhorred practices that went along with it… even the priests gave up on Yahweh…

A Prayer for Restoration

We are rightfully wary of any theology that turns God into a wish granting genie who exists just to please us… but we cannot let this scepticism hide the reality that God guarantees to hear and answer our prayers.  In fact we can have every confidence that whatever we ask for according to His will is ours.  This morning Pastor Joe looks at what it means to pray in God’s will and what God longs for us to do with…

In the Father’s Footsteps

Fatherlessness is such a huge problem in our society because without a father, especially young boys, have no tangible example of how the ethics and values of their family get lived out in the world.  This is the unique contribution that fathers make to society and in so many ways we long to follow in our fathers’ footsteps.  John continues on with the theme of the fatherhood of God we looked at last week to show us that how we…

Taking the Gospel for Granted

Familiarity breeds contempt… or so they say.  Basically the longer you have something or someone in your life, the easier it is to take them for granted. As John writes to the churches who are probably a few generations old now, he desperately wants them to recognise that it is very easy to take Jesus for granted… to get bored of Jesus and chase after something else.  So John takes a moment to remind the people just how powerful the…

God is Light

When we are convicted of our sin it can often feel painful… this is mainly because our sin is pretty much always driven by our pride and so when we get ourselves into trouble it is a slap in the face to our pride as we realise we are not as good as we thought we were. As John continues to unpack the implications of the gospel we are going to wrestle with how we should deal with this conviction.

Gentle Restoration

Paul has continually pleaded with the Galatians not to live under the slavery of the Law but to embrace the freedom of the gospel and this week we see another reason why he cares so much about this.  If we live under the Law we are tempted to view other people who get caught in sin as inferior.  Maybe we are even tempted to profit of their sinfulness by letting it justify our own sin, “at least I’m not that…

Water of Life

So often in this series we have seen Israel get frustrated with a small thing and let it turn them against God.  Yet again in this passage we find the people grumbling and complaining against God and Moses because they have no water.  However, this time it is not the sin of Israel that comes under the spotlight.  This time it is the sin of Moses!  The great leader who had battled so hard to keep the people on track…

Presumptuous Pride

When God handed down His verdict against the cowardly and stiff-necked Israel the nation wept bitterly all night… but when morning came they responded in a way that showed they had not fully come to terms with their sin.  As we examine the first few moments after their conviction we will learn how God wants us to respond to our sin and what is His true heart for sinners.

Ugly Memory – Beautiful Worship

We don’t really like to think about our sin.  I mean we all know that we have sinned but when it comes to worship we like to focus on the fact that we have been forgiven of our sin rather than our sin itself…  how can remembering our sin possibly help our worship?  In Psalm 38 David write a worship song about his sin and as we look at the beautiful language he uses we will see why this ugly…
