“No, you can’t always get what you want
But if you try sometime you find you get what you need”
Christmas is a time when we can reflect on how true this statement Is. The things that we want are often not the thing that we need. In the book of Isaiah, God spoke a message of judgement against the nation of Israel because they rejected him as their God. But Judgement wasn’t the end of the story. In the midst of this message of judgement, God promises a message of future hope for the nation. But this future hope wasn’t going to come in a way that people would expect. This future hope came through the birth of a baby. And it is through this baby that God’s promises of future hope are realised. Through the birth of Jesus, we don’t get the gift that we want, but in him, we are given the gift that we all need.
